As an arthritic patient, inflammation is of particular concern as my personal diagnosis led to a daily dose of hydroxychloroquine which has been touted to decrease the activity of my overactive immune system, thereby mitigating (making less severe) chronic pain. However, what about the side effects and toxicity of the prescribed drug? A recent article by WebMD.com, October 1, 2024, stated that Hydroxychloroquine can lead to neuropathy (nerve problems), myopathy (tenderness), and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and more. While taking my health into my own hands, the study of essential oils, and the research of their therapeutic significances, has led me to my own personal discovery of the power of Terpenes.

In this article, the star Terpene (from the Sesquiterpene Chemical Family) is Beta caryophyllene and it's found in Black Pepper essential oil. Yes, as in "Black Pepper!" Who knew?? It is quite amazing and no, it does not burn at all. What makes Black Pepper essential oil so amazing, I'm thrilled that you've asked. It is wonderfully warming and has an additional plethora of promising properties. However, before we get to its incredible inflammation relieving therapeutics, let's begin with a few attributes.

Its fresh, dry intense aroma is woody and spicy, it's valued as a digestive stimulant in Chinese and Greek medicines and is purported as a rubefacient and vasodilator, widening blood vessels leading to increased blood flow and circulation, causing movement while decreasing stiffness, creating a feeling of warmth and pain relief. As well, as a spice oil ironically enough, Black Pepper essential oil is a fever reducer... who would have guessed it, right?

On a personal note, a personal Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis changed everything for me in 2013. While prescription medication caused me to lose 90% of my hair, it also sparked a deeper search for natural healing. I discovered the power of essential oils and plant powered remedies and solutions, and through research and training, I found relief and renewal. I'd say that my diagnosis was the strong nudge I personally needed to take my health into my own hands.

Prior to becoming a Certified Aromatherapist and an Essential Oil Specialist, facilitating a personalized health journey for recovering spiritually and finding relief physically, prayerfully I chose purpose over pain as the catalyst for my personal wellness, thus choosing to educate myself on this can-be debilitating condition.

Backed by Science, here's what you've been waiting for. Considered a "Terpene", the dominant constituent in Black Pepper essential oil is β-caryophyllene, or BCP for short, belonging to the Sesquiterpene Chemical Family. Limonene-(d) from the Monoterpene Chemical Family is also quite dominant, contributing effectiveness in Black Pepper essential oil as well, providing analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. The significant amount of BCP causes Black Pepper essential oil to behave well in reducing inflammation. Some of the main components of black pepper essential oil, including d-limonene and

β-caryophyllene, show good anti-inflammatory activity (Baylac and Racine 2003).

Due to its analgesic (pain relieving), warming, and anti-inflammatory qualities,

Black Pepper is great in sports massage oils for sore muscles, as well as pain and stiffness.

As one of my personal favorites, I gravitated towards Black Pepper essential oil after learning of its usefulness in rheumatic pain. Its connection to the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is key in pain relief. Perhaps in the near future I'll post my Graduate Certification Research Paper explaining the relationship between BCP and the ECS. Additionally, there are fascinating, worthwhile reads on Terpenes for pain and inflammation, all supported by solid research.
